Valuation on convex bodies
Builds on Convex bodyAbelian group
Definition
Let and let be the set of nonempty compact convex subsets of (the convex bodies in the broad sense). Let be an abelian group, for example . A valuation on is a map such that for all with .
Remarks
If is convex, then is nonempty, since a convex set is connected and cannot be the union of two disjoint nonempty closed sets. So and the condition makes sense. A valuation is continuous if it is continuous for the Hausdorff distance, and invariant under rigid motions if for every rigid motion of .
Example: , Lebesgue measure on . For measurable sets, always holds, so volume is a valuation. The constant function is a valuation as well; it is the Euler characteristic.
Non-example: on . For and one gets , but .
Many authors include the empty set in and require . Then the Euler characteristic takes the value at .
