Vanishing moments of a wavelet
Builds on WaveletMomentLebesgue integral
Definition
Let be a wavelet and let be an integer. Suppose that is Lebesgue integrable on for . The wavelet has vanishing moments if its moments of order less than vanish:
Remarks
Equivalently, for every polynomial of degree less than . In terms of the Fourier transform, under the same integrability, this says that has a zero of order at least at . The number of vanishing moments of is the largest such .
Example: the Haar wavelet has , so it has vanishing moment.
Non-example: the Haar wavelet does not have vanishing moments, since .
