Variational capacity

Builds on Compact setSobolev space

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set, and let K⊆ΩK \subseteq \Omega be a compact set. Let Cc∞(Ω)C_c^\infty(\Omega) be the set of smooth real functions with compact support in Ω\Omega. The variational capacity of KK relative to Ω\Omega is cap⁡p(K,Ω)=inf⁡{∫Ω∣∇u∣p dx:u∈Cc∞(Ω), u≥1 on K}.\operatorname{cap}_p(K, \Omega) = \inf \set{ \int_\Omega \abs{\nabla u}^p \, dx : u \in C_c^\infty(\Omega), \ u \ge 1 \text{ on } K }.

Remarks

For an open set U⊆ΩU \subseteq \Omega one sets cap⁡p(U,Ω)=sup⁡{cap⁡p(K,Ω):K⊆U compact}\operatorname{cap}_p(U, \Omega) = \sup \set{ \operatorname{cap}_p(K, \Omega) : K \subseteq U \text{ compact} }. For an arbitrary set E⊆ΩE \subseteq \Omega one sets cap⁡p(E,Ω)=inf⁡{cap⁡p(U,Ω):E⊆U⊆Ω, U open}\operatorname{cap}_p(E, \Omega) = \inf \set{ \operatorname{cap}_p(U, \Omega) : E \subseteq U \subseteq \Omega, \ U \text{ open} }. The infimum does not change if the admissible functions are taken in the Sobolev space W01,p(Ω)W_0^{1,p}(\Omega) and continuous, with u≥1u \ge 1 on KK.

Example: let 0<r<R0 < r < R, p≠np \ne n, α=(p−n)/(p−1)\alpha = (p - n)/(p - 1), and let σn−1\sigma_{n-1} be the area of the unit sphere in ℝn\R^n. The radial function uu with u=1u = 1 for ∣x∣≤r\abs{x} \le r, u=(∣x∣α−Rα)/(rα−Rα)u = (\abs{x}^\alpha - R^\alpha)/(r^\alpha - R^\alpha) for r≤∣x∣≤Rr \le \abs{x} \le R, and u=0u = 0 outside, solves the pp-Laplace equation on the shell. Its gradient has size ∣α∣∣x∣α−1/∣rα−Rα∣\abs{\alpha} \abs{x}^{\alpha - 1} / \abs{r^\alpha - R^\alpha}, and integration in polar coordinates gives cap⁡p(Bˉr,BR)=σn−1∣α∣p−1∣rα−Rα∣1−p.\operatorname{cap}_p(\bar B_r, B_R) = \sigma_{n-1} \abs{\alpha}^{p-1} \abs{r^\alpha - R^\alpha}^{1-p}. For p=2p = 2 and n=3n = 3 this is 4πrR/(R−r)4 \pi r R / (R - r).

Non-example of an admissible function: a function u∈Cc∞(Ω)u \in C_c^\infty(\Omega) with u=1/2u = 1/2 on KK fails the condition u≥1u \ge 1 on KK and does not enter the infimum.

A related notion is the Sobolev pp-capacity, which uses ∫ℝn(∣u∣p+∣∇u∣p) dx\int_{\R^n} (\abs{u}^p + \abs{\nabla u}^p) \, dx and no reference set Ω\Omega; for subsets of a bounded open set Ω\Omega both capacities have the same null sets.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
