Definition
Let , , be a smooth Lagrangian, and fix a step size . A discrete Lagrangian is a smooth function that approximates the action: Here is the solution of the Euler–Lagrange equation with and . The discrete action of a sequence is . The variational integrator defined by is the map given by the discrete Euler–Lagrange equations: Here and denote the gradients with respect to the first and the second argument. These are the equations for , with and fixed.
Remarks
Example: take and Then and . Their sum vanishes exactly when , which is the Störmer–Verlet method. Every variational integrator is symplectic in the variables with , when is regular, that is, when this relation can be solved for . So variational integrators are geometric integrators for symplecticity. If approximates the exact action to order , then the method has order at least .
