Statement
Let be twice continuously differentiable, and consider the equation with and . Fix a step size . The Störmer–Verlet method sets and
- The positions are the same as the positions computed by the leapfrog method (velocity Verlet) from with step size .
- On a bounded interval , the error is as .
Remarks
The two-step formula comes from adding the Taylor expansions of and : the odd powers cancel, and . So the local error is . In a two-step recurrence of this kind, a local error made at one step is carried forward with a factor of size at most . Summing over steps gives a global error . For clause 1, the leapfrog positions satisfy and , so , and both start from the same . Velocities do not appear in the two-step form; they can be recovered by , with error . Example: for the recurrence gives , the exact solution.

For a student
The two-step form needs only positions, which halves the storage. Its drawbacks are that velocities are only implicit and that round-off is larger, because a small term is added to large positions. The velocity Verlet form fixes both points and is the same method. Its good long-time behaviour comes from it being symmetric and symplectic.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
