Vector projection

Builds on Euclidean vectorLength of a vectorVectors are perpendicular if and only if their dot product is zero

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer, let aa be a vector in ℝn\mathbb{R}^n, and let bb be a nonzero vector in ℝn\mathbb{R}^n. Let a⋅b=a1b1+⋯+anbna \cdot b = a_1 b_1 + \dots + a_n b_n be the dot product. The vector projection of aa onto bb is the vector proj⁡ba=a⋅bb⋅b b.\operatorname{proj}_b a = \frac{a \cdot b}{b \cdot b} \, b. The scalar projection of aa onto bb is the real number a⋅b∥b∥\dfrac{a \cdot b}{\|b\|}, where ∥b∥\|b\| is the length of bb.

Remarks

The vector a−proj⁡baa - \operatorname{proj}_b a is the vector rejection of aa from bb. Its dot product with bb is 00, so it is perpendicular to bb. Among all multiples cbc b of bb, the projection is the one that makes ∥a−cb∥\|a - c b\| smallest. If θ\theta is the angle between a≠0a \neq 0 and bb, then the scalar projection is ∥a∥cos⁡θ\|a\| \cos \theta.
