Harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces Definition
Walsh function
Definition
For , let be the -th Rademacher function on . Thus , where is the -th binary digit of , taken from the expansion that does not end in an infinite run of s. Let be an integer with binary expansion , . The Walsh function of index (in Paley order) is a finite product, with .
Remarks
The family is the Walsh system. It is an orthonormal basis of (see Lp space). Other orderings of the same functions are in use, such as the Walsh order by number of sign changes.
Example: , so . Here on and on , while on and elsewhere. So is on the four quarters of , and , as orthogonality to requires.
Non-example: the function is orthogonal to many Walsh functions, but it is not a Walsh function, since it takes values other than .
