Definition

Let ψ∈L2(ℝ)\psi \in L^2(\R) (see Lp space). For j,k∈ℤj, k \in \Z put ψj,k(x)=2j/2 ψ(2jx−k).\psi_{j,k}(x) = 2^{j/2} \, \psi(2^j x - k). The function ψ\psi is an orthonormal wavelet if the family (ψj,k)j,k∈ℤ(\psi_{j,k})_{j, k \in \Z} is an orthonormal basis of L2(ℝ)L^2(\R).

Remarks

The factor 2j/22^{j/2} makes ∥ψj,k∥2=∥ψ∥2\norm{\psi_{j,k}}_2 = \norm{\psi}_2. Then every f∈L2(ℝ)f \in L^2(\R) has the expansion f=∑j,k⟨f,ψj,k⟩ψj,kf = \sum_{j,k} \ip{f}{\psi_{j,k}} \psi_{j,k}, convergent in L2(ℝ)L^2(\R). If ψ\psi is also integrable, then ∫ℝψ(x) dx=0\int_\R \psi(x) \, dx = 0. Weaker notions are also called wavelets: ψ\psi such that (ψj,k)(\psi_{j,k}) is a Riesz basis or a frame, and the admissible functions of the continuous wavelet transform.

Example: the Haar wavelet ψ=1[0,1/2)−1[1/2,1)\psi = 1_{[0, 1/2)} - 1_{[1/2, 1)} is an orthonormal wavelet. For instance, ψ0,0\psi_{0,0} and ψ1,0\psi_{1,0} are orthogonal, because ψ1,0\psi_{1,0} lives on [0,12)[0, \tfrac12), where ψ0,0=1\psi_{0,0} = 1, and has integral 00.

Non-example: the Gaussian ψ(x)=e−πx2\psi(x) = e^{-\pi x^2} is not an orthonormal wavelet. Its translates ψ0,0\psi_{0,0} and ψ0,1\psi_{0,1} are both positive, so ⟨ψ0,0,ψ0,1⟩>0\ip{\psi_{0,0}}{\psi_{0,1}} > 0 and they are not orthogonal.
