Wedderburn's theorem on simple Artinian rings
Statement
Let be a simple ring that is left Artinian. Then there are an integer and a division ring such that , the matrix ring of matrices over . The integer is unique, and is unique up to isomorphism.
Remarks
Let be a minimal left ideal of , which exists because is Artinian. The sum of the right translates is a nonzero two-sided ideal, so it equals . Hence is a finite direct sum of copies of , say of them. Then , and is a division ring by Schur's lemma, so with . For example, a finite-dimensional simple algebra over is , or . The Artinian hypothesis is needed: the Weyl algebra over is simple and is not a matrix ring over a division ring.

For a student
The theorem is the case of one factor in the Artin–Wedderburn theorem. It is the starting point of the theory of central simple algebras: a central simple algebra over a field is for a central division algebra over . This is why the Brauer group, which collects these , classifies central simple algebras up to matrix size. Uniqueness of follows because is the endomorphism ring of the unique simple left module of .
