Statement

Let XX be a set and let FL(X)\mathrm{FL}(X) be the free lattice on XX, with join and meet ∨\vee and ∧\wedge. Then FL(X)\mathrm{FL}(X) satisfies Whitman's condition (W): for all a,b,c,d∈FL(X)a, b, c, d \in \mathrm{FL}(X), if a∧b≤c∨d,a \wedge b \le c \vee d, then a≤c∨da \le c \vee d, or b≤c∨db \le c \vee d, or a∧b≤ca \wedge b \le c, or a∧b≤da \wedge b \le d.

Remarks

The converse implication is automatic in any lattice, since a∧b≤aa \wedge b \le a, a∧b≤ba \wedge b \le b, c≤c∨dc \le c \vee d and d≤c∨dd \le c \vee d. So (W) says that an inequality between a meet and a join holds in FL(X)\mathrm{FL}(X) only for one of these four trivial reasons. Proof idea: Whitman described the order of FL(X)\mathrm{FL}(X) on lattice terms by recursive rules, the solution of the word problem for free lattices. He showed that these rules define a lattice with the universal property. The rule for comparing a meet with a join is exactly (W). Every sublattice of a lattice satisfying (W) satisfies (W), since joins and meets in a sublattice are computed in the big lattice. Example of failure: in the lattice of subsets of {1,2,3,4}\set{1, 2, 3, 4}, take a={1,2,3}a = \set{1, 2, 3}, b={1,2,4}b = \set{1, 2, 4}, c={1}c = \set{1} and d={2}d = \set{2}. Then a∩b={1,2}=c∪da \cap b = \set{1, 2} = c \cup d, but a⊈{1,2}a \not\subseteq \set{1, 2}, b⊈{1,2}b \not\subseteq \set{1, 2}, {1,2}⊈c\set{1, 2} \not\subseteq c and {1,2}⊈d\set{1, 2} \not\subseteq d. So this lattice is not a sublattice of any free lattice.

Going deeper

For a student

Whitman's condition is the key structural property of free lattices. Together with the rules for generators, it gives an algorithm that decides the order of FL(X)\mathrm{FL}(X). It is also the main test for deciding which finite lattices embed in free lattices, because it passes to sublattices. Since the subsets of a four-element set fail (W), a free lattice cannot contain this Boolean lattice as a sublattice.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
