Definition

Let MM and NN be smooth manifolds and let C∞(M,N)C^\infty(M, N) be the set of smooth maps from MM to NN. For an integer k≥0k \ge 0, let Jk(M,N)J^k(M, N) be the manifold of kk-jets of maps from MM to NN, the jet bundle of the trivial bundle M×N→MM \times N \to M. Each f∈C∞(M,N)f \in C^\infty(M, N) has the jet map jkf ⁣:M→Jk(M,N)j^k f \colon M \to J^k(M, N), p↦jpkfp \mapsto j^k_p f. For an open set U⊆Jk(M,N)U \subseteq J^k(M, N), put ℳ(U)={f∈C∞(M,N):jkf(M)⊆U}.\mathcal{M}(U) = \set{ f \in C^\infty(M, N) : j^k f(M) \subseteq U }. The sets ℳ(U)\mathcal{M}(U), with UU open in Jk(M,N)J^k(M, N), form a base of a topology on C∞(M,N)C^\infty(M, N), the Whitney CkC^k topology. The Whitney C∞C^\infty topology is the topology whose base is the union over all k≥0k \ge 0 of these bases.

Remarks

With the Whitney C∞C^\infty topology, C∞(M,N)C^\infty(M, N) is a Baire space. If MM is compact, it coincides with the weak C∞C^\infty topology, the topology of uniform convergence of all derivatives, which is built from the compact-open topology on jets. If MM is not compact, it is much finer.

Example: for M=N=ℝM = N = \R, let ε ⁣:ℝ→(0,∞)\varepsilon \colon \R \to (0, \infty) be continuous and let f∈C∞(ℝ,ℝ)f \in C^\infty(\R, \R). The set U={(x,y)∈ℝ×ℝ:∣y−f(x)∣<ε(x)}U = \set{ (x, y) \in \R \times \R : \abs{y - f(x)} < \varepsilon(x) } is open in J0(ℝ,ℝ)=ℝ×ℝJ^0(\R, \R) = \R \times \R. So ℳ(U)={g:∣g(x)−f(x)∣<ε(x) for all x}\mathcal{M}(U) = \set{ g : \abs{g(x) - f(x)} < \varepsilon(x) \text{ for all } x } is an open neighbourhood of ff.

Non-example: the constant maps fn=1/nf_n = 1/n do not converge to 00 in the Whitney C∞C^\infty topology on C∞(ℝ,ℝ)C^\infty(\R, \R), although they converge uniformly with all derivatives. Take f=0f = 0 and ε(x)=1/(1+x2)\varepsilon(x) = 1/(1 + x^2) above. For each nn, 1/n>ε(x)1/n > \varepsilon(x) for large ∣x∣\abs{x}, so no fnf_n lies in this neighbourhood of 00.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
