Wiener's criterion

Builds on Regular boundary pointCapacity of a setOpen setBoundary

Statement

Let n≥3n \ge 3, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set, and let ξ∈∂Ω\xi \in \partial\Omega be a boundary point. For each integer k≥1k \ge 1 let Ek={x∈ℝn∖Ω:2−k−1≤∣x−ξ∣≤2−k},E_k = \set{x \in \R^n \setminus \Omega : 2^{-k-1} \le \abs{x - \xi} \le 2^{-k}}, and let cap⁡(Ek)\operatorname{cap}(E_k) be its Newtonian capacity. Then ξ\xi is a regular boundary point of Ω\Omega if and only if ∑k=1∞2k(n−2)cap⁡(Ek)=∞.\sum_{k=1}^{\infty} 2^{k(n-2)} \operatorname{cap}(E_k) = \infty.

Remarks

The factor 2k(n−2)2^{k(n-2)} normalizes the capacity of EkE_k by the capacity of a ball of radius 2−k2^{-k}, which is a constant times 2−k(n−2)2^{-k(n-2)}. So the criterion says that the complement of Ω\Omega is not too thin near ξ\xi, measured shell by shell. Any ratio λ∈(0,1)\lambda \in (0, 1) in place of 12\frac12 gives an equivalent criterion, and constant factors in the normalization of capacity do not matter. Example: suppose the complement of Ω\Omega contains a cone with vertex ξ\xi. Then each EkE_k contains a ball of radius comparable to 2−k2^{-k}, so every term of the series is bounded below and ξ\xi is regular. Example: if ξ\xi is an isolated point of ℝn∖Ω\R^n \setminus \Omega, then EkE_k is empty for large kk, the series converges, and ξ\xi is irregular. In the plane there is an analogous criterion with logarithmic capacity.

For a student

Wiener's criterion is the complete answer to the question of regularity for the Laplacian. It explains the exterior cone condition, the irregularity of the Lebesgue spine, and the irregularity of single points for n≥3n \ge 3. The logarithmic version gives the same in the plane. It also shows that regularity depends only on the complement of Ω\Omega near ξ\xi, and it extends to a large class of elliptic equations.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
