Definition
A function of two integer variables is a hypergeometric term if the ratios and are rational functions of and . A Wilf–Zeilberger pair (WZ pair) is a pair of hypergeometric terms and such that
- for all integers ;
- for a rational function , called the WZ certificate.
Remarks
Consequence: suppose that for each the sum converges and as . Then summing clause 1 over gives a telescoping sum on the right. So , and the sum is constant in .
Example: let and , with binomial coefficients that vanish outside . Pascal's rule gives , which is . The certificate is . So is constant, and its value at proves .
Non-example: the same with is not a WZ pair, since clause 1 would need , which fails for , : but .
