Yoneda lemma

Statement

Let ๐’ž\mathcal{C} be a locally small category and let AA be an object of ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. Let ๐’๐ž๐ญ\mathbf{Set} be the category of sets and let ๐’žop\mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}} be the opposite category. Let Fโ€‰โฃ:๐’žopโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญF \colon \mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}} \to \mathbf{Set} be a presheaf on ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. Let Nat(Homโก(โˆ’,A),F)\mathrm{Nat}(\Hom(-, A), F) be the class of natural transformations from the hom functor Homโก(โˆ’,A)\Hom(-, A) to FF. Then the map Nat(Homโก(โˆ’,A),F)โ†’F(A),ฮฑโ†ฆฮฑA(idโกA)\mathrm{Nat}(\Hom(-, A), F) \to F(A), \qquad \alpha \mapsto \alpha_A(\id_A) is a bijection. Its inverse sends xโˆˆF(A)x \in F(A) to the natural transformation ฮฑ\alpha with ฮฑX(f)=F(f)(x)\alpha_X(f) = F(f)(x) for every object XX and every fโ€‰โฃ:Xโ†’Af \colon X \to A. The bijection is natural in both AA and FF.

Remarks

Proof idea: let ฮฑ\alpha be natural and x=ฮฑA(idโกA)x = \alpha_A(\id_A). For fโ€‰โฃ:Xโ†’Af \colon X \to A, naturality applied to ff and the element idโกA\id_A gives ฮฑX(idโกAโˆ˜f)=F(f)(ฮฑA(idโกA))\alpha_X(\id_A \circ f) = F(f)(\alpha_A(\id_A)), that is, ฮฑX(f)=F(f)(x)\alpha_X(f) = F(f)(x). So ฮฑ\alpha is determined by xx, and a direct check shows that every xx defines a natural transformation in this way.

Example: take F=Homโก(โˆ’,B)F = \Hom(-, B) for an object BB. The lemma says that natural transformations Homโก(โˆ’,A)โ†’Homโก(โˆ’,B)\Hom(-, A) \to \Hom(-, B) correspond to elements of Homโก(A,B)\Hom(A, B), that is, to morphisms Aโ†’BA \to B; each one is post-composition with that morphism.

The covariant form is the same: for a functor Gโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญG \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set}, natural transformations Homโก(A,โˆ’)โ†’G\Hom(A, -) \to G correspond to elements of G(A)G(A). Local smallness is needed for Homโก(โˆ’,A)\Hom(-, A) to take values in ๐’๐ž๐ญ\mathbf{Set}.

For a student

The lemma is the reason that the Yoneda embedding Aโ†ฆHomโก(โˆ’,A)A \mapsto \Hom(-, A) is fully faithful, so every category sits inside a category of presheaves without loss of information. It implies that a representing object of a representable functor is unique up to unique isomorphism. This is why objects defined by a universal property are unique up to unique isomorphism. In practice it is used to prove that two objects are isomorphic by showing that their hom functors are naturally isomorphic. Applied to a group seen as a one-object category, it gives Cayley's theorem, that every group embeds in a group of permutations of its own elements.
