Definition
Let be a hypergeometric term in both variables, as in the definition of a WZ pair. Zeilberger's algorithm searches, for in turn, for polynomials , not all zero, and a hypergeometric term with rational, such that For each it applies Gosper's algorithm to the term in , with unknown . The polynomial equation of Gosper's method is then linear in the and in the unknown coefficients of . It stops at the first for which a solution exists and returns the and .
Remarks
If vanishes for outside a finite range depending on , summing the relation over all makes the right side a telescoping sum equal to . So satisfies the recurrence . The search terminates when is a proper hypergeometric term. Such a term is a polynomial, times a product of factorials of integer-linear forms in and , times . This termination result is part of the fundamental theorem of Wilf and Zeilberger. Example: for the algorithm stops at with , and . Check by Pascal's rule: , which gives . Non-example: for no solution exists here, since that would need to be a hypergeometric term in , and Gosper's algorithm shows it is not.
