Mathematical logic and foundations Axiom

Zero is not a successor

Builds on Successor functionPeano axioms

Statement

Let S ⁣:ℕ→ℕS \colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N} be the successor function of the natural numbers. For each natural number nn, S(n)≠0S(n) \neq 0.

Remarks

This is one of the Peano axioms. In a construction of ℕ\mathbb{N}, it is a theorem. With the injectivity of the successor function, it shows that the numbers 0,S(0),S(S(0)),…0, S(0), S(S(0)), \dots are all different.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
