A tangent is perpendicular to the radius
Builds on Tangent line to a circleCircleVectors are perpendicular if and only if their dot product is zero
Statement
Let be a circle with the centre and the radius in the Euclidean plane . Let be a point of , and let be a line through . Then is tangent to at if and only if is perpendicular to the radius . That is, for each point of .
Remarks
A proof: for on , we have . So is the only point of on if and only if . Thus each point of has exactly one tangent line. The same holds for a sphere and its tangent plane in .
