Real functions Proposition

Absolute value is multiplicative

Builds on Absolute value

Statement

For all real numbers aa and bb, ∣ab∣=∣a∣ ∣b∣|a b| = |a| \, |b|. Here ∣⋅∣|\cdot| is the absolute value.

Remarks

Proof: check the four cases of the signs of aa and bb. In particular ∣an∣=∣a∣n|a^n| = |a|^n for each natural number nn, and ∣a/b∣=∣a∣/∣b∣|a / b| = |a| / |b| for b≠0b \neq 0. The modulus of complex numbers is also multiplicative.
