Definition
Let be a field, let be a vector space over , and let be an affine space over . The affine group is the set of all bijective affine maps , with composition as the group operation. For it is written , and for it is written .
Remarks
Example: on , the map with and is in , since ; its inverse is . Non-example: with is affine but not bijective, so it is not in the affine group. Each element of has the form with and , in a unique way. The map to the linear part is a surjective homomorphism onto the general linear group, whose kernel is the group of translations, isomorphic to . Hence , a semidirect product. It is isomorphic to the group of matrices with .
