An orthonormal family is linearly independent

Builds on Orthonormal familyLinear independence

Statement

Let VV be an inner product space over ℝ\R or ℂ\C. Then each orthonormal family in VV is linearly independent.

Remarks

If ∑iaiei=0\sum_i a_i e_i = 0, then the inner product with eje_j gives aj=0a_j = 0. More generally, a family of nonzero pairwise orthogonal vectors is linearly independent. So an orthonormal family in an nn-dimensional space has at most nn vectors.
