Statement

Let X0⊆X⊆X1X_0 \subseteq X \subseteq X_1 be three Banach spaces such that X0X_0 and X1X_1 are reflexive, the inclusion X0→XX_0 \to X is compact, and the inclusion X→X1X \to X_1 is continuous. Let T>0T > 0 and 1<p,q<∞1 < p, q < \infty. Let Lp(0,T;X0)L^p(0, T; X_0) be the Lebesgue space of Bochner-integrable functions with values in X0X_0, and let u′u' be the weak time derivative. Let W={u∈Lp(0,T;X0):u′∈Lq(0,T;X1)}W = \set{ u \in L^p(0, T; X_0) : u' \in L^q(0, T; X_1) }. Give WW the norm ∥u∥W=∥u∥Lp(0,T;X0)+∥u′∥Lq(0,T;X1)\norm{u}_W = \norm{u}_{L^p(0, T; X_0)} + \norm{u'}_{L^q(0, T; X_1)}. Then the inclusion of WW into Lp(0,T;X)L^p(0, T; X) is compact.

Remarks

Proof idea: by Ehrling's lemma, for every η>0\eta > 0 there is CηC_\eta with ∥v∥X≤η∥v∥X0+Cη∥v∥X1\norm{v}_X \le \eta \norm{v}_{X_0} + C_\eta \norm{v}_{X_1} for all v∈X0v \in X_0. A bounded set in WW is bounded in Lp(0,T;X0)L^p(0, T; X_0) and equicontinuous in time with values in X1X_1, because of the bound on u′u'. This gives a subsequence that converges in Lp(0,T;X1)L^p(0, T; X_1), and Ehrling's lemma upgrades the convergence to Lp(0,T;X)L^p(0, T; X).

Example: let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded Lipschitz domain, X0=H1(Ω)X_0 = H^1(\Omega), X=L2(Ω)X = L^2(\Omega) and X1=(H1(Ω))′X_1 = (H^1(\Omega))', the dual space. The Rellich–Kondrachov theorem gives the compact inclusion. So a sequence of approximate solutions of a parabolic equation, bounded in L2(0,T;H1(Ω))L^2(0, T; H^1(\Omega)) with time derivatives bounded in L2(0,T;(H1)′)L^2(0, T; (H^1)'), has a subsequence that converges strongly in L2(0,T;L2(Ω))L^2(0, T; L^2(\Omega)). This strong convergence lets one pass to the limit in nonlinear terms, as in the construction of Leray weak solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations.

Both hypotheses are needed. If X0=X=X1X_0 = X = X_1 is an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, the constant functions uk(t)=eku_k(t) = e_k, for an orthonormal sequence (ek)(e_k), are bounded in WW with uk′=0u_k' = 0, but no subsequence converges in Lp(0,T;X)L^p(0, T; X). If the bound on u′u' is dropped, the functions uk(t)=sin⁡(kt)vu_k(t) = \sin(kt) v with a fixed v≠0v \ne 0 are bounded in Lp(0,T;X0)L^p(0, T; X_0), but they converge weakly to 00 and not strongly.

For a student

The lemma is the standard compactness tool for evolution equations. One builds approximate solutions, for example by the Galerkin method. Energy estimates bound them in L2(0,T;H1)L^2(0, T; H^1) and their time derivatives in a dual space. The lemma then gives strong convergence in L2(0,T;L2)L^2(0, T; L^2). It plays for time-dependent problems the role that the Rellich–Kondrachov theorem plays for stationary ones.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
