Barycentric interpolation formula
Builds on Lagrange basis polynomialsLagrange polynomialPolynomial interpolationField
Statement
Let be a field, let , let be pairwise distinct, and let . Let be the interpolation polynomial of degree at most with for all . Define the barycentric weights and let . Then for every that is not a node:
- (first form) ;
- (second form) .
Remarks
The Lagrange basis polynomials satisfy , so the first form is the Lagrange formula rewritten. Applying the first form to the constant data , whose interpolant is , gives . Dividing the first form by this identity gives the second form.
Example: nodes have weights and . The second form gives , the line through the data.
Once the weights are computed, in operations, each evaluation costs operations, and adding a new node updates the weights in operations. The weights do not depend on the data, so the same weights serve for many data sets.

For a student
The second form is the standard way to evaluate an interpolation polynomial in floating point arithmetic. For good node families, such as Chebyshev nodes, the weights have simple closed forms and the evaluation is numerically stable. Unlike the Newton form, it needs no ordering of the nodes and no table of divided differences.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
