Builds on Dirichlet formRadon measureLocally compact space

Statement

Let XX be a locally compact separable metric space and let mm be a positive Radon measure on XX with full support. Let (ℰ,ℱ)(\mathcal{E}, \mathcal{F}) be a regular Dirichlet form on L2(X,m)L^2(X, m), and let d={(x,x):x∈X}d = \set{(x, x) : x \in X} be the diagonal of X×XX \times X. Then there are

  1. a symmetric form ℰ(c)\mathcal{E}^{(c)} on ℱ∩Cc(X)\mathcal{F} \cap C_c(X) with the strong local property: ℰ(c)(u,v)=0\mathcal{E}^{(c)}(u, v) = 0 whenever vv is constant on a neighbourhood of the support of uu;
  2. a symmetric positive Radon measure JJ on X×X∖dX \times X \setminus d, the jumping measure;
  3. a positive Radon measure kk on XX, the killing measure;

such that for all u,v∈ℱ∩Cc(X)u, v \in \mathcal{F} \cap C_c(X) ℰ(u,v)=ℰ(c)(u,v)+∬X×X∖d(u(x)−u(y))(v(x)−v(y)) J(dx,dy)+∫Xu(x)v(x) k(dx).\mathcal{E}(u, v) = \mathcal{E}^{(c)}(u, v) + \iint_{X \times X \setminus d} \big(u(x) - u(y)\big)\big(v(x) - v(y)\big) \, J(dx, dy) + \int_X u(x) v(x) \, k(dx). The form ℰ(c)\mathcal{E}^{(c)} and the measures JJ and kk are uniquely determined by ℰ\mathcal{E}.

Remarks

The proof starts from the Markov property, which gives ℰ(u,v)≤0\mathcal{E}(u, v) \le 0 for nonnegative u,v∈ℱ∩Cc(X)u, v \in \mathcal{F} \cap C_c(X) with disjoint supports. So −ℰ(u,v)-\mathcal{E}(u, v) is a positive functional of such pairs, and a Riesz representation argument turns it into the measure JJ. The killing measure comes from the behaviour of ℰ\mathcal{E} on functions equal to 11 near a compact set, and ℰ(c)\mathcal{E}^{(c)} is what remains. Some texts put a factor 22 or 12\tfrac12 in front of the jump term, which only rescales JJ. For the form ∫ℝn∇u⋅∇v dx\int_{\R^n} \nabla u \cdot \nabla v \, dx on W1,2(ℝn)W^{1,2}(\R^n), the form is all local: J=0J = 0 and k=0k = 0. For the fractional form ∬(u(x)−u(y))(v(x)−v(y))∣x−y∣−n−α dx dy\iint (u(x) - u(y))(v(x) - v(y)) \abs{x - y}^{-n - \alpha} \, dx \, dy with 0<α<20 < \alpha < 2, only the jump part is present. For a Hunt process attached to ℰ\mathcal{E}, the three parts describe its continuous motion, its jumps and its killing.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula is the analytic counterpart of the Lévy–Khintchine decomposition of a Lévy process into a diffusion part, a jump part and a killing rate. A regular Dirichlet form is local, meaning that J=0J = 0, exactly when its associated Hunt process has continuous paths up to its lifetime. In practice one reads off JJ and kk from a given form to understand the process, or one builds forms from chosen JJ and kk to construct jump processes.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
