Definition

Let n,k≥1n, k \ge 1 and let V ⁣:ℝn×ℝk→ℝV \colon \R^n \times \R^k \to \R be a smooth function, written V(x,c)V(x, c) with state x∈ℝnx \in \R^n and control c∈ℝkc \in \R^k. A point xx is a degenerate critical point of V(⋅,c)V(\cdot, c) if:

  1. ∇xV(x,c)=0\nabla_x V(x, c) = 0, so xx is a critical point of V(⋅,c)V(\cdot, c), and
  2. det⁡HxV(x,c)=0\det H_x V(x, c) = 0, where HxVH_x V is the Hessian matrix of second derivatives in the variables xx.

The bifurcation set of the family VV is the set BV={c∈ℝk:V(⋅,c) has a degenerate critical point}.B_V = \set{c \in \R^k : V(\cdot, c) \text{ has a degenerate critical point}}.

Remarks

Example: the cusp family V(x,a,b)=x4/4+ax2/2+bxV(x, a, b) = x^4/4 + a x^2/2 + b x with n=1n = 1, k=2k = 2. Clause 1 reads x3+ax+b=0x^3 + a x + b = 0 and clause 2 reads 3x2+a=03x^2 + a = 0. Then a=−3x2a = -3x^2 and b=2x3b = 2x^3, and eliminating xx gives BV={(a,b):4a3+27b2=0}B_V = \set{(a, b) : 4a^3 + 27b^2 = 0}, a curve with a cusp at the origin.

Non-example: for V(x,c)=x2+cxV(x, c) = x^2 + c x the only critical point is x=−c/2x = -c/2, and V′′=2≠0V'' = 2 \ne 0, so clause 2 always fails and BVB_V is empty.

Let M={(x,c):∇xV(x,c)=0}M = \set{(x, c) : \nabla_x V(x, c) = 0} and let χ ⁣:M→ℝk\chi \colon M \to \R^k be the projection (x,c)↦c(x, c) \mapsto c. When MM is a smooth submanifold of dimension kk, which holds for generic families, BVB_V is the set of critical values of χ\chi. Some authors also add the Maxwell set, where two critical values of V(⋅,c)V(\cdot, c) are equal; this node uses the narrower meaning.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
