Statement

Let Ω⊂ℝn\Omega \subset \R^n be a bounded open set of diameter dd. Assume Ω\Omega is star-shaped with respect to every point of an open ball B⊂ΩB \subset \Omega of radius ρ>0\rho > 0. Let m≥1m \ge 1 be an integer and 1≤p≤∞1 \le p \le \infty. Let uu be in the Sobolev space Wm,p(Ω)W^{m,p}(\Omega) and let 0≤k≤m0 \le k \le m. Let ∣u∣Wk,p(Ω)\abs{u}_{W^{k,p}(\Omega)} be the seminorm formed from the LpL^p norms of the weak derivatives of uu of order exactly kk. Then there is a constant CC, depending only on nn, mm, pp and d/ρd / \rho, with the following property. For every u∈Wm,p(Ω)u \in W^{m,p}(\Omega) there is a polynomial qq of degree less than mm such that ∣u−q∣Wk,p(Ω)≤C d m−k ∣u∣Wm,p(Ω)for k=0,1,…,m.\abs{u - q}_{W^{k,p}(\Omega)} \le C \, d^{\,m - k} \, \abs{u}_{W^{m,p}(\Omega)} \quad \text{for } k = 0, 1, \ldots, m.

Remarks

One can take for qq the averaged Taylor polynomial of uu of order mm. It is the Taylor polynomial of degree m−1m - 1 about a point yy, averaged over y∈By \in B with a smooth weight. The remainder of this averaged Taylor formula is an integral operator applied to the derivatives of order mm of uu, and its bounds give the estimate. The scaling d m−kd^{\,m-k} follows by mapping Ω\Omega to a set of diameter 11.

The right side involves only the seminorm of order mm, with no lower-order terms. Every polynomial of degree less than mm has ∣q∣Wm,p=0\abs{q}_{W^{m,p}} = 0, so such a bound can only control uu up to these polynomials, which is why qq appears.

Example: for m=1m = 1 the lemma gives a constant cc with ∥u−c∥Lp(Ω)≤Cd ∥∇u∥Lp(Ω)\norm{u - c}_{L^p(\Omega)} \le C d \, \norm{\nabla u}_{L^p(\Omega)}, a Poincaré-type inequality.

In finite element analysis, the lemma is applied on a reference element to the error u−Iuu - I u of an interpolation operator II that reproduces polynomials of degree less than mm. Since u−Iu=(u−q)−I(u−q)u - I u = (u - q) - I(u - q), the error is bounded by the seminorm ∣u∣Wm,p\abs{u}_{W^{m,p}}, and scaling back to an element of size hh gives the factor hm−kh^{m-k}.

For a student

For a triangle of size hh and piecewise linear interpolation, the lemma with m=2m = 2 gives errors of order h2h^2 in L2L^2 and of order hh in H1H^1, for u∈H2u \in H^2. The constant depends on d/ρd / \rho, which is why finite element meshes must avoid very thin elements. Combined with Céa's lemma, it turns approximation by polynomials into convergence rates of the finite element method.
