Definition
Let be a constant, the viscosity. Burgers' equation with viscosity is the equation for an unknown function , where and are partial derivatives. For it is the viscous Burgers' equation. For it is the inviscid Burgers' equation, usually written in the conservation form
Remarks
The inviscid equation is the scalar conservation law with flux , which is uniformly convex. For smooth the two forms agree, but for discontinuous weak solutions only the conservation form is meaningful, and it fixes the shock speed . By the method of characteristics, a smooth solution with initial value satisfies ; if is somewhere decreasing, the solution ceases to be smooth at time .
Example: solves the inviscid equation, and also the viscous one for every . Check: , , and .
Non-example: solves the linear heat equation but not Burgers' equation with . Indeed for it , while is not identically zero.
