Ordinary differential equations Proposition
C^1 vector fields satisfy the Picard–Lindelöf hypotheses
Statement
Let be an open subset of , let be continuously differentiable, let and let . Then there are real numbers , and with these properties. The closed ball of radius around lies in . The time-independent field , extended in any way outside , satisfies the Picard–Lindelöf hypotheses at on with constants .
Remarks
Proof: choose with . The continuous functions and are bounded on the compact ball , by and . The mean value inequality makes -Lipschitz on . Then choose with . So the initial value problem , has a unique local solution for each field . The same argument works for a time-dependent field of class .
