Statement

Let δ>0\delta > 0 and 1≤p≤∞1 \le p \le \infty. Let SδS^\delta be the Bochner–Riesz operator of order δ\delta on ℝ2\R^2, the operator with multiplier (1−∣ξ∣2)+δ(1 - \abs{\xi}^2)_+^\delta. Then SδS^\delta is bounded on Lp(ℝ2)L^p(\R^2) if and only if ∣1p−12∣<1+2δ4.\Big| \frac{1}{p} - \frac{1}{2} \Big| < \frac{1 + 2\delta}{4}. In particular, SδS^\delta is bounded on Lp(ℝ2)L^p(\R^2) for every δ>0\delta > 0 and every 4/3≤p≤44/3 \le p \le 4.

Remarks

Lennart Carleson and Per Sjölin proved the sufficiency of the condition in 1972. The necessity holds in every dimension nn. The kernel of SδS^\delta decays like ∣x∣−(n+1)/2−δ\abs{x}^{-(n + 1)/2 - \delta} with oscillation, and it lies in LpL^p only when 1/p−1/2<(1+2δ)/(2n)1/p - 1/2 < (1 + 2\delta)/(2n). Boundedness of SδS^\delta on LpL^p forces its kernel into LpL^p. Since SδS^\delta is self-adjoint, boundedness on LpL^p is equivalent to boundedness on Lp′L^{p'}, and this gives the other half of the condition. The proof of sufficiency decomposes the multiplier into pieces near the circle ∣ξ∣=1\abs{\xi} = 1 and uses an L4L^4 estimate for oscillatory integrals whose phase has curved level sets.

Example: for δ=1/4\delta = 1/4 the condition reads ∣1/p−1/2∣<3/8\abs{1/p - 1/2} < 3/8, that is 8/7<p<88/7 < p < 8. Without δ>0\delta > 0 the result fails: for δ=0\delta = 0, Fefferman's ball multiplier theorem shows that S0S^0 is bounded only on L2(ℝ2)L^2(\R^2).

The same condition in dimension nn, namely ∣1/p−1/2∣<(1+2δ)/(2n)\abs{1/p - 1/2} < (1 + 2\delta)/(2n), is the Bochner–Riesz conjecture; the theorem settles it for n=2n = 2, while it is open for n≥3n \ge 3.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the two-dimensional case of the Bochner–Riesz problem, and its proof has the same structure as the two-dimensional case of the restriction conjecture. For δ>0\delta > 0 and 4/3≤p≤44/3 \le p \le 4, it gives LpL^p convergence of the Bochner–Riesz means SRδf→fS^\delta_R f \to f for f∈Lp(ℝ2)f \in L^p(\R^2). In higher dimensions, the Stein–Tomas restriction theorem gives a partial range, and the full range is open.
