Statement

  1. Every bounded symmetric domain is biholomorphic to a product of irreducible bounded symmetric domains, and the factors are unique up to order and biholomorphism.
  2. Every irreducible bounded symmetric domain is biholomorphic to one of the following domains. Here Z∗Z^* is the conjugate transpose of ZZ, and M>0M > 0 means that the Hermitian matrix MM is positive definite.
    • type Im,nI_{m,n}: {Z∈Mm×n(ℂ):In−Z∗Z>0}\set{Z \in M_{m \times n}(\C) : I_n - Z^* Z > 0};
    • type IInII_n: {Z∈Mn×n(ℂ):ZT=−Z, In−Z∗Z>0}\set{Z \in M_{n \times n}(\C) : Z^T = -Z,\ I_n - Z^* Z > 0};
    • type IIInIII_n: {Z∈Mn×n(ℂ):ZT=Z, In−Z∗Z>0}\set{Z \in M_{n \times n}(\C) : Z^T = Z,\ I_n - Z^* Z > 0};
    • type IVnIV_n: {z∈ℂn:∣zTz∣<1, 1−2z∗z+∣zTz∣2>0}\set{z \in \C^n : \abs{z^T z} < 1,\ 1 - 2 z^* z + \abs{z^T z}^2 > 0};
    • two exceptional domains, of complex dimensions 1616 and 2727.

Remarks

Élie Cartan obtained the classification in 1935. The proof passes to Lie theory. A bounded symmetric domain is G/KG/K, where GG is the identity component of its automorphism group, a semisimple Lie group, and KK is a maximal compact subgroup. Irreducible domains correspond to simple GG for which KK has a nontrivial centre. Reading these off from the classification of symmetric spaces gives the list: GG is SU(m,n)SU(m, n), SO∗(2n)SO^*(2n), Sp(2n,ℝ)Sp(2n, \R), SO0(n,2)SO_0(n, 2), or real forms of E6E_6 and E7E_7.

Example: Im,1I_{m,1} is the unit ball of ℂm\C^m, and I1,1=III1I_{1,1} = III_1 is the unit disc. The type IIInIII_n domain is the bounded model of the Siegel upper half-space of degree nn.

For small indices some types coincide, so the list is without repetitions only for suitable ranges of the indices.

For a student

Through the list, analysis on bounded symmetric domains reduces to matrix computations. The domains are the Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type, and each has a compact dual, such as a Grassmannian for type II. Quotients of these domains by arithmetic groups include the Shimura varieties and the moduli spaces of abelian varieties, so the list organises much of the theory of automorphic forms.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
