Statement

Let kk be an algebraically closed field and let XX be a smooth projective surface over kk. Let E⊂XE \subset X be a curve with E≅ℙ1E \cong \mathbb{P}^1 and self-intersection number E⋅E=−1E \cdot E = -1. Then there are a smooth projective surface YY, a point p∈Yp \in Y and a morphism f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y with the following property. The morphism ff is isomorphic to the blow-up of YY at pp, with exceptional curve EE.

Remarks

The idea of the proof is to choose a very ample divisor HH on XX with H1(X,𝒪X(H))=0H^1(X, \mathcal{O}_X(H)) = 0, put m=H⋅Em = H \cdot E, and use the linear system ∣H+mE∣\abs{H + mE}. It has degree 00 on EE, so it contracts EE to a point, and a computation of sections shows that the image surface is smooth at that point. Example: a smooth cubic surface over kk contains 2727 lines, each a (−1)(-1)-curve, and contracting six disjoint lines among them gives ℙ2\mathbb{P}^2. The condition E⋅E=−1E \cdot E = -1 cannot be weakened to E⋅E<0E \cdot E < 0. A smooth rational curve with E⋅E=−2E \cdot E = -2 can sometimes be contracted, but the image point is then singular, an A1A_1 singularity.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the basic step of the minimal model program for surfaces. Contracting (−1)(-1)-curves one at a time lowers the Picard number, so the process stops, at a surface with no (−1)(-1)-curves. So every smooth projective surface is obtained from a surface without (−1)(-1)-curves by finitely many blow-ups of points. The surfaces without (−1)(-1)-curves are then sorted by the Enriques–Kodaira classification.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
