Complex logarithm
Builds on Complex exponentialArgument of a complex numberModulus of a complex number
Definition
Let be a complex number with . A complex logarithm of is a complex number with , where is the complex exponential of . The notation means the set of all complex logarithms of , or one chosen element of this set.
Remarks
Let be the modulus of , let be the real natural logarithm, and let be an argument of . Then the logarithms of are exactly the numbers with . The number has no logarithm, because for each . So is a multivalued function on . Its principal branch is , with . For example, the logarithms of are with , and .
