Partial differential equations Definition
Conservation law
Definition
Let and let with each a function, called the flux. The system of conservation laws with flux is the partial differential equation for an unknown , where and are partial derivatives. For it is called a scalar conservation law. The components of are the conserved quantities.
Remarks
The name comes from the integral form. Let be a solution, and let be a bounded region with smooth boundary and outer unit normal . Then by the divergence theorem, so the total amount of in changes only through the flux across . The integral form, or the equivalent weak form with test functions, still makes sense for discontinuous , and it is the basis of weak solutions.
Example: the inviscid Burgers' equation is a scalar conservation law with and . The Euler equations of gas dynamics are a system with conserved quantities: mass, momentum and energy.
Non-example: the equation is not of conservation form with a flux depending on only. Indeed it equals , so the amount of is not conserved: grows like for integrable solutions, as shows.
