Definition
Let be a nonzero function that satisfies the admissibility condition where is the Fourier transform. Let (see Lp space). Let (the scale) and (the position) be real numbers. The continuous wavelet transform of with respect to is
Remarks
The integral converges by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, and . Taking the Fourier transform in and using the Plancherel theorem gives Calderón's identity So can be recovered from , in a weak sense, by . Many authors take only ; then the constant changes and, for real , one obtains .
Example: the Mexican hat has equal to a constant times , so and is defined.
Non-example: for the Gaussian , , and diverges near . The formula for still makes sense, but Calderón's identity fails, and this choice is excluded by the definition.
