Convex integrand
Builds on Integral functional with a Lagrangian densityConvex function on R^n
Definition
Let be open and let . Let , written , be the integrand of an integral functional . The integrand is convex (in the gradient variable) if for every and the map is a convex function on .
Remarks
Example: is convex in for any function . Indeed is convex, and the term does not depend on .
Non-example: with is not convex. Here , but .
A integrand is convex in exactly when its Hessian is positive semidefinite everywhere. Some authors use the term for integrands that are jointly convex in , which is a stronger condition. For and , convexity is stronger than polyconvexity, quasiconvexity and rank-one convexity.
