Convolution theorem for the Laplace transform
Builds on Laplace transform
Statement
Let be piecewise continuous, and let be real constants with and for all . Let the convolution be Let and be the Laplace transforms of and . Then for each with , the Laplace transform of converges at , and .
Remarks
The proof writes as a double integral over the quadrant , and changes variables to . The absolute convergence for justifies the change of the order of integration. The convolution is commutative: . Example: is the convolution of and , that is . In solving initial value problems, the solution with zero initial values is the convolution of the forcing term with the impulse response.
