Coupon collector's problem
Builds on Geometric distributionLinearity of expectationMean of the geometric distributionVariance of a sum of independent random variables
Problem
There are different types of coupons. Each draw gives a coupon of a uniform random type, independently of the other draws. Let be the number of draws needed to collect all types. Find .
Remarks
Solution: write , where is the number of draws to get a new type when types are known. Each counts trials up to the first success, with success probability . So by the mean of the geometric distribution. By linearity of expectation, , where is the -th harmonic number. So , with the Euler–Mascheroni constant . The are independent, so .
