Example

For each integer N≥1N \ge 1, Ingrid Daubechies constructed an orthonormal wavelet ψ\psi from a multiresolution analysis. Its scaling function φ\varphi satisfies a refinement equation φ(x)=2∑k=02N−1hkφ(2x−k)\varphi(x) = \sqrt2 \sum_{k=0}^{2N-1} h_k \varphi(2x - k) with 2N2N real coefficients. Both φ\varphi and ψ\psi have compact support of length 2N−12N - 1, and ψ\psi has NN vanishing moments. For N=1N = 1 this is the Haar wavelet.

The case N=2N = 2 has the filter h0=1+342,h1=3+342,h2=3−342,h3=1−342.h_0 = \frac{1 + \sqrt3}{4\sqrt2}, \quad h_1 = \frac{3 + \sqrt3}{4\sqrt2}, \quad h_2 = \frac{3 - \sqrt3}{4\sqrt2}, \quad h_3 = \frac{1 - \sqrt3}{4\sqrt2}. Check of the filter conditions. The sum is 842=2\frac{8}{4\sqrt2} = \sqrt2, as needed for ∫φ=1\int \varphi = 1. The sum of squares is (4+23)+(12+63)+(12−63)+(4−23)32=1\frac{(4 + 2\sqrt3) + (12 + 6\sqrt3) + (12 - 6\sqrt3) + (4 - 2\sqrt3)}{32} = 1. And h0h2+h1h3=(1+3)(3−3)+(3+3)(1−3)32=23−2332=0h_0 h_2 + h_1 h_3 = \frac{(1 + \sqrt3)(3 - \sqrt3) + (3 + \sqrt3)(1 - \sqrt3)}{32} = \frac{2\sqrt3 - 2\sqrt3}{32} = 0. So the filter is orthogonal to its shift by 22, which reflects the orthogonality of the translates φ(⋅−k)\varphi(\cdot - k).

The wavelet is ψ(x)=2∑kgkφ(2x−k)\psi(x) = \sqrt2 \sum_k g_k \varphi(2x - k) with gk=(−1)kh1−kg_k = (-1)^k h_{1-k}, so its coefficients are g−2=h3g_{-2} = h_3, g−1=−h2g_{-1} = -h_2, g0=h1g_0 = h_1, g1=−h0g_1 = -h_0. Check of two vanishing moments: ∑kgk=h3−h2+h1−h0=0\sum_k g_k = h_3 - h_2 + h_1 - h_0 = 0 and ∑kkgk=−2h3+h2−h0=−2+23+3−3−1−342=0\sum_k k g_k = -2h_3 + h_2 - h_0 = \frac{-2 + 2\sqrt3 + 3 - \sqrt3 - 1 - \sqrt3}{4\sqrt2} = 0. These two discrete conditions give ∫ψ=0\int \psi = 0 and ∫xψ(x) dx=0\int x \psi(x) \, dx = 0. The scaling function of this case is continuous but not smooth, and it has no closed formula; it is computed from the refinement equation.
