Dini–Lipschitz criterion
Builds on Modulus of continuityLebesgue constants of the Dirichlet kernelUniform convergenceFourier seriesContinuous function
Statement
Let be a continuous -periodic function with modulus of continuity Suppose that Then the partial sums of the Fourier series of converge to uniformly on .
Remarks
Let be the uniform distance from to the trigonometric polynomials of degree at most . Since for such a polynomial , one gets , where is the Lebesgue constant. Jackson's theorem gives with an absolute constant , and , so the error is , which tends to by hypothesis. Example: every Hölder continuous , with for some , satisfies the hypothesis; so does with for small .

For a student
The proof is a model of a general principle: if a linear approximation process has norms , then it converges for all functions whose best approximation error is . Here the norms grow like , and Jackson's theorem converts best approximation error into modulus of continuity. The criterion contains the uniform convergence of Fourier series of Hölder and Lipschitz continuous functions.
