Definition
Let be the scaling function of a multiresolution analysis of , with refinement equation . Put for . For a sequence , one level of the discrete wavelet transform gives the two sequences The discrete wavelet transform with levels applies one level to , then to the resulting , and so on times. Its output is the detail sequences of all levels together with the last coarse sequence.
Remarks
The map is a unitary operator from onto , so the transform is inverted by its adjoint. If for , where , then and for the associated orthonormal wavelet . The same name is used for the coefficient family of a function, and for finite signals with periodic or other boundary rules.
Example: for the Haar filter one gets and . Then and . For (and zeros elsewhere) one level gives and . Energy is preserved: .
Non-example: the pairwise means alone discard information, since and have the same mean; the transform keeps the details as well.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
