Dougall's formula
Builds on Generalized hypergeometric functionPochhammer symbol
Statement
Let be a nonnegative integer and let be complex numbers with Assume that none of the lower parameters lies in , and that . Write for the Pochhammer symbol. Then the terminating generalized hypergeometric series at is
Remarks
The series is very well-poised: each upper parameter plus the matching lower parameter gives , and the pair is present. The condition says that the series is -balanced: the lower parameters sum to more than the upper ones. One proof applies Whipple's transformation, which turns the into a multiple of . Under the condition one has , so this reduces to a balanced . The Pfaff–Saalschütz theorem then sums it, and the product on the right comes out. For both sides equal . Letting term by term gives the summation of the well-poised with upper parameters , which in turn contains part 3 of Dixon's identity.
Going deeper
For a student
Dougall's formula sits near the top of the classical summation formulas for hypergeometric series at . Specialising parameters gives many other summations, which is why it is a hub in tables of identities. Its -analogue is Jackson's summation for a very well-poised .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
