Energy of a measure

Definition
Let and let be a finite positive Borel measure on with compact support. Let be the Newtonian kernel when , and the logarithmic kernel when , with . The energy of is For it lies in ; for it lies in , because is bounded below on the compact set .
Remarks
Equivalently, , where is the potential of . Some authors include the normalising constant of the fundamental solution in , which multiplies the energy by a constant. The infimum of over probability measures on a compact set determines the capacity of . For instance, when and with this kernel, the Newtonian capacity of is the reciprocal of that infimum.
Example: let be the uniform probability measure on the unit sphere in . Its potential is , which equals on the sphere, so . In the plane, the uniform probability measure on the unit circle has potential , which is on the circle, so its energy is .
Non-example: the Dirac measure is a positive Borel measure with compact support, but , so it does not have finite energy.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
