Problem

Let E⊆ℂE \subseteq \C be a closed set. Let w ⁣:E→[0,∞)w \colon E \to [0, \infty) be an upper semicontinuous weight such that the set {z∈E:w(z)>0}\set{z \in E : w(z) > 0} has positive logarithmic capacity. If EE is unbounded, assume also that ∣z∣ w(z)→0\abs{z}\, w(z) \to 0 as ∣z∣→∞\abs{z} \to \infty in EE. Let Q=−log⁡wQ = -\log w be the external field. For a Borel probability measure μ\mu with support in EE, set Iw(μ)=∫∫log⁡1∣z−t∣ w(z) w(t) dμ(z) dμ(t).I_w(\mu) = \int \int \log \frac{1}{\abs{z - t}\, w(z)\, w(t)}\, d\mu(z)\, d\mu(t). The problem is to find Vw=inf⁡μIw(μ)V_w = \inf_\mu I_w(\mu), a measure μw\mu_w that attains it, and its support SwS_w.

Remarks

The weighted energy equals I(μ)+2∫Q dμI(\mu) + 2\int Q\, d\mu, where I(μ)I(\mu) is the logarithmic energy. So the field QQ pushes the charge away from where QQ is large. For w=1w = 1 on a compact set EE this is the problem of the equilibrium measure of EE. Gauss considered the analogous problem for the Newtonian kernel in space. The weighted logarithmic version in the plane is the subject of the book of Saff and Totik (1997). Existence and uniqueness are known under the hypotheses above: VwV_w is finite, there is a unique minimiser μw\mu_w, and SwS_w is compact with positive capacity. The minimiser is characterised by Frostman-type conditions on its logarithmic potential UμwU^{\mu_w}. For a constant FwF_w, one has Uμw+Q≥FwU^{\mu_w} + Q \ge F_w quasi-everywhere on EE and Uμw+Q≤FwU^{\mu_w} + Q \le F_w on SwS_w. Finding SwS_w for a given weight is the hard part, and it is done explicitly only for special weights. Example: on E=ℝE = \R with w(x)=e−x2w(x) = e^{-x^2}, the support is [−1,1][-1, 1] and μw\mu_w has the semicircle density 2π1−x2\frac{2}{\pi}\sqrt{1 - x^2}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
