Euler–Poisson equation for higher derivatives
Builds on Integral functional with a Lagrangian densityEuler–Lagrange equationPartial derivative
Definition
Let and . Let , written , be a function of class , and write for its partial derivative in . Consider the functional The Euler–Poisson equation of is the equation for an unknown .
Remarks
For it is the Euler–Lagrange equation of an integral functional. A minimiser of among functions with prescribed and for solves it. To see this, take variations with for , integrate the term with by parts times, and apply the fundamental lemma of the calculus of variations.
Example: for and , one has and , so the equation is . Every cubic polynomial solves it. Non-example: does not solve this equation, since .
