Definition

Let φ\varphi be the scaling function of an orthonormal multiresolution analysis of L2(ℝ)L^2(\R) with real finite filter (hn)n∈ℤ(h_n)_{n \in \Z}, so that φ(x)=2∑nhn φ(2x−n).\varphi(x) = \sqrt{2} \sum_{n} h_n \, \varphi(2x - n). Put gn=(−1)nh1−ng_n = (-1)^n h_{1-n} and let ψ(x)=2∑ngnφ(2x−n)\psi(x) = \sqrt{2}\sum_n g_n \varphi(2x - n) be the associated wavelet. For j,k∈ℤj, k \in \Z write φj,k(x)=2j/2φ(2jx−k)\varphi_{j,k}(x) = 2^{j/2}\varphi(2^j x - k) and ψj,k(x)=2j/2ψ(2jx−k)\psi_{j,k}(x) = 2^{j/2}\psi(2^j x - k). For f∈L2(ℝ)f \in L^2(\R) put aj,k=⟨f,φj,k⟩a_{j,k} = \ip{f}{\varphi_{j,k}} and dj,k=⟨f,ψj,k⟩d_{j,k} = \ip{f}{\psi_{j,k}}.

The fast wavelet transform from level JJ down to level J0<JJ_0 < J is the algorithm that takes the sequence (aJ,k)k(a_{J,k})_k and, for j=J,J−1,…,J0+1j = J, J-1, \dots, J_0 + 1, computes aj−1,k=∑mhm−2k aj,m,dj−1,k=∑mgm−2k aj,m.a_{j-1,k} = \sum_{m} h_{m-2k} \, a_{j,m}, \qquad d_{j-1,k} = \sum_{m} g_{m-2k} \, a_{j,m}. Its output is (aJ0,k)k(a_{J_0,k})_k together with (dj,k)k(d_{j,k})_k for J0≤j<JJ_0 \le j < J. The inverse fast wavelet transform computes, for j=J0+1,…,Jj = J_0 + 1, \dots, J, aj,m=∑khm−2k aj−1,k+∑kgm−2k dj−1,k.a_{j,m} = \sum_{k} h_{m-2k} \, a_{j-1,k} + \sum_{k} g_{m-2k} \, d_{j-1,k}.

Remarks

The formulas follow from φj−1,k=∑mhm−2kφj,m\varphi_{j-1,k} = \sum_m h_{m-2k}\varphi_{j,m} and ψj−1,k=∑mgm−2kφj,m\psi_{j-1,k} = \sum_m g_{m-2k}\varphi_{j,m}, which are the refinement equations rescaled. Each step is a convolution with a filter followed by downsampling by 22.

Example: for the Haar wavelet, h0=h1=1/2h_0 = h_1 = 1/\sqrt{2}, so g0=1/2g_0 = 1/\sqrt{2} and g1=−1/2g_1 = -1/\sqrt{2}. One step maps aj,⋅a_{j,\cdot} to aj−1,k=(aj,2k+aj,2k+1)/2a_{j-1,k} = (a_{j,2k} + a_{j,2k+1})/\sqrt{2} and dj−1,k=(aj,2k−aj,2k+1)/2d_{j-1,k} = (a_{j,2k} - a_{j,2k+1})/\sqrt{2}, and the inverse step recovers aj,2ka_{j,2k} and aj,2k+1a_{j,2k+1} from these two numbers.

Non-example: if the downsampling is left out and all outputs of the filters are kept, the result is the undecimated (stationary) wavelet transform. It is redundant: it doubles the number of coefficients at each level, while the fast wavelet transform keeps the total number of coefficients equal to the input length.

With an input of length NN and filters of length LL, the algorithm uses at most about 2LN2LN multiplications.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
