Definition
Let . Let and be smooth. Let , a symmetric positive semidefinite matrix at each point. The Fokker–Planck equation with drift and diffusion matrix is the equation for : where denotes partial derivatives. It is associated with the stochastic differential equation , where is a -dimensional Wiener process.
Remarks
Under suitable regularity of and , if has a smooth probability density , then solves this equation. Example: for , and , the equation is . Its solution is the density of ; one checks by direct differentiation. Non-example: is not a Fokker–Planck equation, since it would need , which is not positive semidefinite. The equation is also called the forward Kolmogorov equation. In one dimension it reads .
