Fundamental strip of a Mellin transform

Builds on Mellin convergenceMellin transformBig O notationIntegrable function

Statement

Let f ⁣:(0,∞)→ℂf \colon (0, \infty) \to \C be integrable on every compact subinterval [u,v]⊂(0,∞)[u, v] \subset (0, \infty). Let a,b∈ℝa, b \in \R with b<ab < a, and assume that f(x)=O(x−a) as x→∞,f(x)=O(x−b) as x→0+.f(x) = O(x^{-a}) \text{ as } x \to \infty, \qquad f(x) = O(x^{-b}) \text{ as } x \to 0^+. Then ff is Mellin convergent at every s∈ℂs \in \C with b<Re⁡s<ab < \operatorname{Re} s < a. So the Mellin transform ℳf(s)\mathcal{M}f(s) is defined on the open strip b<Re⁡s<ab < \operatorname{Re} s < a.

Here OO is big O notation.

Remarks

Let σ=Re⁡s\sigma = \operatorname{Re} s. Choose 0<δ<1<R0 < \delta < 1 < R with ∣f(x)∣≤Cx−b\abs{f(x)} \le C x^{-b} on (0,δ](0, \delta] and ∣f(x)∣≤Cx−a\abs{f(x)} \le C x^{-a} on [R,∞)[R, \infty). Then xσ−1∣f(x)∣≤Cxσ−b−1x^{\sigma - 1} \abs{f(x)} \le C x^{\sigma - b - 1} on (0,δ](0, \delta], which is integrable since σ−b>0\sigma - b > 0. Also xσ−1∣f(x)∣≤Cxσ−a−1x^{\sigma - 1} \abs{f(x)} \le C x^{\sigma - a - 1} on [R,∞)[R, \infty), which is integrable since σ−a<0\sigma - a < 0. On [δ,R][\delta, R], ff is integrable and xσ−1x^{\sigma - 1} is bounded.

The largest open strip α<Re⁡s<β\alpha < \operatorname{Re} s < \beta on which ff is Mellin convergent is called the fundamental strip and is written ⟨α,β⟩\langle \alpha, \beta \rangle. Example: f(x)=e−xf(x) = e^{-x} is O(x0)O(x^0) at 00 and O(x−a)O(x^{-a}) at ∞\infty for every aa, so its fundamental strip is ⟨0,∞⟩\langle 0, \infty \rangle, where ℳf=Γ\mathcal{M}f = \Gamma. Example: f(x)=1/(1+x)f(x) = 1/(1 + x) is O(1)O(1) at 00 and O(x−1)O(x^{-1}) at ∞\infty, giving the strip ⟨0,1⟩\langle 0, 1 \rangle. The strict inequalities are needed: for this ff at s=1s = 1, the bound xσ−a−1=x−1x^{\sigma - a - 1} = x^{-1} is not integrable at ∞\infty, and indeed ∫0∞dx/(1+x)\int_0^\infty dx/(1+x) diverges.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the first step in every computation with Mellin transforms: one finds the strip before anything else. The edges of the strip are tied to the asymptotics of ff. Conversely, under suitable conditions, poles of the continued transform beyond the strip give terms of the asymptotic expansion of ff at 00 or at ∞\infty. On the open strip the transform is also holomorphic, which is the companion result on differentiability of the Mellin transform. Under the substitution x=e−ux = e^{-u}, the statement becomes the familiar fact that a function with exponential decay at both ends of ℝ\R has a two-sided Laplace transform on a strip.
