General solution of an inhomogeneous linear equation
Builds on Linear differential equation of order nHomogeneous linear equationFundamental system of solutionsSuperposition principle
Statement
Let be an open interval, let be continuous, and let . Let be a solution of on , and let be a fundamental system of on . Then a function is a solution of on if and only if for some real numbers .
Remarks
Proof: solves if and only if , by linearity. Then is a combination of the fundamental system. The method of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters find a particular solution . Example: has , so its solutions are .
