Definition
Let . Consider pairs where is an open neighbourhood of and is a holomorphic function. Two pairs and are equivalent if there is an open neighbourhood of with on . A germ of a holomorphic function at is an equivalence class for this relation. The germ of is written , and the set of all germs at is written , or .
Remarks
This is the notion of germ applied to holomorphic functions. Sums and products of representatives on a common neighbourhood make a commutative ring, and evaluation is well defined. Example: the pairs and define the same germ at , since the two functions agree on the unit disc. Non-example: the pairs and do not define the same germ at , since at every point near . By the identity theorem, two holomorphic functions on a connected open set containing have the same germ at only if they are equal. Taking Taylor series at gives an isomorphism of onto the ring of convergent power series in . The germs at all points of an open set are the stalks of the sheaf of holomorphic functions on .
