Irreducible analytic germ
Builds on Germ of an analytic setPrime idealGerm of a holomorphic function
Definition
Let and let be a germ of an analytic set at . The germ is irreducible if:
- is not the empty germ, and
- whenever for germs of analytic sets at , one has or .
Remarks
Equivalently, the ideal of holomorphic germs vanishing on is a prime ideal of . Example: the germ at of the cusp in is irreducible. The germ is irreducible in , since it is a Weierstrass polynomial of degree in . A factorization would give a germ with , which is impossible by comparing orders of vanishing. Since is a unique factorization domain, the ideal is prime, hence radical, and the Rückert Nullstellensatz gives , a prime ideal. Non-example: the germ at of is reducible. With , the convergent binomial series, it is the union of the germs of the two smooth curves and , and neither contains the other. Every germ of an analytic set has a decomposition into irreducible germs, unique up to order when no is contained in another.
