Definition
Let be a complex manifold, for example an open subset of . A subset is a complex analytic variety in , or an analytic subset of , if:
- is closed in , and
- every point has an open neighbourhood and finitely many holomorphic functions on with
Remarks
For points the second condition holds with and , so it only matters at points of . Example: in , is an analytic variety, with and ; it is the union of the two coordinate axes. Non-example: the closed unit disc in is closed but not analytic. Let be a point with and let be a connected neighbourhood of . A holomorphic function on that vanishes on the part of the disc in vanishes on an open set, hence on all of . So the common zero set would be , not the part of the disc in . A set that satisfies condition 2 only at its own points is called locally analytic. It need not be closed, for example the punctured line in . Some authors reserve "variety" for irreducible analytic sets; here no irreducibility is required. The empty set and itself are analytic varieties, and finite unions and arbitrary intersections of analytic varieties are analytic varieties.
